The Difference Between Opinion and Argumentative Writing

Oftentimes, the opinion and argumentative genres are confused. Though they seem to share many similarities, there’s certainly a difference between them! Let’s take a look at a few ways to differentiate. 

 

Opinion

Argumentative

Purpose

To share a specific view point or state a personal opinion

To offer a specific point of view in a way that the reader will acknowledge as valid and worth considering

Language

Subjective- usually based on motion


1st person point of view

Objective- based more on logical reasoning


3rd person point of view

Structure

Opinion statement supported by main reasons developed by details

Claim supported by main reasons developed by evidence

Example

I am definitely in favor of wildlife conservation.
