How does developing one educator’s practice ripple across multiple classrooms and affect all students? It starts by developing the educator.

Our research-based methodology uses whole class instruction to provide assured experiences for all learners. It begins with a connection to literature as a way to introduce any foundational skill, moves into modeling for the teacher to articulate the thought processes of an author, then gradually releases to students for guided practice of explicit foundational skills and, ultimately, application of those skills.

That’s where the ripple begins. Developing one educator’s instructional practice creates impact that extends beyond a single lesson or classroom:

• Assured experiences for all learners through explicit, whole-class instruction
• A common vocabulary students and educators can use to talk about writing
• Transferable skills students apply in reading, writing, and across content areas
• Student ownership as learners internalize the language, use it in peer conversations, and build their own writing toolboxes

We, at Empowering Writers, teach teachers how to teach writing so that anytime they are reading, in all content areas, it’s pre-writing. And anytime they are writing they are reading.
