Do you have lessons that explicitly teach the steps of Constructed Response?
Each lesson has a step-by-step procedure that emphasizes key instructional skills needed for text based responses and includes source texts, tasks, and exemplar responses. Lessons such as "Strategic Reading – Informed Writing", "Analyzing for Givens and Variables", and "Finding Evidence - Be a Text Detective" utilize EW's methodology - introducing the skill, clearly modeling the thought process, moving into guided practice, and closing with student application of the skill. Ongoing practice across all text experiences is essential for mastery.
Do you have a way to monitor growth with ongoing assessments and scoring system?
Our steps are taught and practiced over time and not all at once. The scaffolded structure builds skills progressively. Five assessments throughout the year provide the framework and materials to collect, analyze, and provide actionable feedback on student responses so teachers have what they need to target instruction and monitor growth over time.
As of July 1st, 2026 these assessments will be embedded within the Hub digital resource or available for purchase for print only users.

Does Empowering Writers offer training to teach Constructed Response?
Our training, Constructed Response - A Step by Step Approach introduces and provides teachers the opportunity to practice each step for short and extended constructed response. Learning paraphrasing and citing techniques, using detail generating questions to identify and explain evidence, and evaluating responses with a rubric to determine strengths and weaknesses are a few examples of skills teachers will practice in this interactive workshop.
