This workshop is geared for educators in grades 3-7 (Grade 2 – welcome to attend for an overview), responsible for teaching narrative writing and for engaging students in literary analysis tasks in response to narrative stories and literature. Besides learning how to teach the key narrative writing skills, participants will receive practical techniques for response to text tasks. Skills for generative and responsive writing will include:

  • establishing a strong reading-writing connection
  • recognizing the characteristics of narrative texts: character/problem/solution, personal experience, imaginative, realistic fiction
  • understanding key literary elements: theme, point of view, tone, plot, voice, conflict, motivation
  • writing entertaining beginnings
  • generating relevant, vivid elaborative detail
  • building suspense
  • developing fully-elaborated main events
  • crafting satisfying extended story endings
  • responding to literature by writing about story theme, point of view, tone, plot, voice, conflict, motivation
  • engaging in narrative extension tasks by assuming another point of view, alternate setting, or ending
