  • Turkey Template and animal cards (see PDF download)
  • Copy paper
  • Crayons or colored pencils
  • Glue
  • Expandable accordion folded summarizing framework (Beginning, Middle, End PDF download)

1. Read the book, A Turkey for Thanksgiving by Eve Bunting.  If you do not have the book, click here for a youtube book reading instead.

  • Share the beginning, middle and end summarizing framework.
  • Together, after reading the book, fill in the summarizing framework

In the beginning, Mr. and Mrs. Moose needed a turkey for Thanksgiving dinner.

In the middle, Mr. Moose and his animal friends looked for a turkey.

In the end, they found a turkey and invited him to join them for Thanksgiving dinner.

  • Next, open up the expandable summarizing framework and have the students help fill in the details of what happened in the middle. (Mr. Moose went to look for a turkey. Rabbit joined in the search. The goats helped look for a turkey. Sheep searched with them. Porcupine waited for the group to come back by to pick him up. They found a turkey.) Use props to help show the sequence of events.

2. Distribute copies of the turkey template. Have students color the turkey and cut it along the dotted line. The teacher will tape accordion folded paper to each part of the turkey pieces.

3. Next, give each child a copy of the animal cards that helped look for the turkey. Have them color, cut out and adhere to the accordion folded paper in sequential order.
