This edition is available while quantities last. The replacement guides for this resource are:

This book was designed to provide everything you’ll need to teach expository and opinion writing in Grades 2-3. The activities included in this guide will teach students to:

  1. Recognize Genre and Author’s Purpose
  2. Annotate, Analyze, Deconstruct Text through Close Reading
  3. Generate Broad Yet Distinct Main Ideas
  4. Use Detail Generating Questions to develop Meaningful Detail
  5. Conduct Research, Take Notes, Respond to Source Texts in Writing
  6. Craft Effective Introductions and Conclusions
  7. Prompts, Projects, Assessments, Process Writing Assignments

Throughout the text close strategic reading skills and annotation and analysis are stressed, providing the foundational understanding necessary for responding to text in writing. Lessons are coded with a 2 pencil icon for grade 2, a 3 pencil icon for grade 3. In addition, shorter “foundational” or “awareness building” lessons that encourage the critical thinking and conceptual understanding that informs writing are designated with a flag. This helps teachers when scheduling instruction – flagged lessons take 10 – 20 minutes. Other lessons that involve analysis, annotation, and, of course actual writing are designed for 30 – 45 minute blocks.

There are numerous “Make it Your Own” suggestions in the Guide, allowing teachers to easily adapt the lessons using content area material, thus empowering them to “write across the curriculum.” The Guide also includes numerous scripted lessons, clearly illustrating the desired dynamic of teacher and student interaction during key lessons. Two different pacing charts are included – one for schools who intend to teach expository and opinion writing across the entire span of the school year, and another for schools that prefer to focus instruction over 2 eight week units, one earlier in the year, the other toward the end of the year.

Student Pages are accessible digitally for print and projection via a link provided in the guide in both English and Spanish.
