Often our students have a hard time describing how they are feeling while in the process of writing a story. Now, for my students in 6th grade, not only do they have to write what feelings look like, but are expected to inference how the characters are feeling in a narrative story or passage from the context clues used. This is a great lesson on teaching showing not telling and how to get students to recognize and elaborate feelings. I first used this lesson when I began teaching Empowering Writers with my 4th graders. Teachers on my entire campus are now taking advantage of these lessons in every grade level! Here are some of our samples for you to look at! This is also a great skill builder to do before February’s lesson of the month on social and emotional learning using the book In My Heart.
