Welcome to my newly formed blog Love to Write and Read All-Day. I am so excited to begin this journey where I get to share my excitement for reading and writing with you. Currently, I teach 6th grade English at Bushland Middle School, but I have spent the last twelve years in the small town just outside Amarillo, in the windy Texas Panhandle teaching 3rd, 4th, and 6th graders.
Over this next semester, many of you will be in crunch time preparing for your yearly state exams. I will be here to help you all along the way. Offering advice, providing student samples, and modeling to guide your lessons and hopefully help relieve some of your stress and your students’ as well.
Not too long ago, I was a teacher in a Texas 4th grade classroom scouring any and all resources, looking for something that I could use to engage and entice my students to love to write. I stumbled upon a book in a closet (sound familiar to anyone??) and pulled it out. The text was published by Empowering Writers and after reading through it, I began to incorporate it into my lesson plans a little bit at a time. Over the next two years, I completely changed the atmosphere in my classroom.

What I love about writing is when I’m all done, and my piece is complete, I can admire all my hard work. – Rachel
As you can see in my students’ posts, the change I saw was all about their perception of writing. Do you hear your students saying “I love writing essays and reading the passages we do in class?” I’m laughing out loud as I type this thinking I never would have gotten to this place without using EW in my classroom. With the change in attitude, I quickly began to see students eager to write, and the effort that they put into their assignments gave them the confidence they needed to be successful.
I can’t wait to share some of my most favorite lessons and some of my hardest challenges as I take you through the daily life of my teaching, and the happenings of my students here at Bushland ISD.
So check back often, tell your friends, and join me in spreading the love of reading and writing with your students today and always!
