Sample #1 and #2 were written by the same student, three months apart.

This narrative piece was written by a second grade student prior to instruction. This was a required timed assessment, administered at the beginning of second grade.

This narrative piece was written by the same student after three months of instruction in narrative writing. The teacher used the Empowering Writers lessons and materials for delivering the following skills:

• Writing an entertaining story beginning
• Creating vivid elaborative detail
• Building suspense
• Genterating extended story endings

You can see that the improvements are directly related to instruction, and are easily identifiable.

 

Sample #3 and #4 were written by another second grade student, five months apart. Sample #4 reflects five months of instruction and growth.

This example of expository writing
(a process piece) was written by a fourth grade student. Look for evidence of the following skills taught:

• Strong organization
• Broad, yet, distinct main ideas
• The use of a variety of detail generating questions that deliver solid ideas ratther than a list of facts
• The use of anecdotes and amazing facts
• The use of a variety of "informative verbs" and "definitive words or phrases"

Here is an example of a narrative piece
written by a second grader at the end of the school year. This timed assessment
clearly shows evidence of all skills taught.
