May Expository Writing Piece (End of the year)
5th Grade
Background:
Each marking period, our town does a district-wide writing prompt. That is when all 5th graders in the town of Windsor write on the same topic. Recently, we completed our end-or-the-year writing prompt to have a score to send off to their middle schools.
Interview with the author:
1. What are some good things we did in writing to help you become such a fabulous author?
In writing class, my teachers helped me make an expository pillar to organize my writing. I struggled with it a little bit, but I soon was able to easily do it. I love to read, so the words that I read in books are really good to describe things, so I try to use them in writing. In every piece of writing that I do, I try to use the golden bricks like a quote, anecdote, descriptive segment, etc. Right before a writing prompt, I get nervous, but I calm down and breathe slowly, Soon, I am calm and do my best.
2. Why do you like writing?
At first, I wasn’t sure if writing was the best thing for me. I would think that I didn’t do my best on a prompt, but I would still get really good scores. Then this year in 5ht grade, my two writing teachers made writing fun and made me realize that I have a lot to write about. When I write, I am able to write about experiences that most people don’t go through. Sometimes, writing can make you feel better when you are holding a lot of feelings inside. Expository writing makes you tell how you really feel about something. Writing is something really exciting that I now love to do.
The prompt the student were asked to write to was the following:
A friend is coming to visit you. Write to your friend suggesting a place you can visit together. Give reasons why it is a good choice.

Dear Dominique,
Have you ever been engulfed by water? Do the scents of delicious chicken tenders make you mouth water? I know that the food, rollercoaster’s, and waterpark at Six Flags makes me want to run to the gate in a second.
There is no doubt that the food at Six Flags is the best our of all of the amusement parks. Soft French fries with gooey , orange, cheese, definitely gives my mouth pleasure, Crispy, moist, chicken tenders are the most delightful to ear if you have a chicken craving A blue raspberry slushy is sugary, sweet, and perfect for a hot, sunny day . This reminds me of the time it was a sweltering hot day and beads of sweat were pouring down my face. As soon as I took a sip of Six Flag’s blue raspberry slushy, I was as cool as ice. Warm beige colored dough with seasoned marinara sauce, layered with whiter American cheese takes places at the pizza shop in Six Flags. Just thinking about the dough masterpiece makes me hungry.
Let me explain to you how the rides at Six Flags are my favorite part there. When you hover in the air with the wind blasting on your face, you are sure to get dizzy on the over 30 feet high swings. Imagine that you are falling down from over an 80 foot high, straight down hill! That is the feeking you will get if you go on Superman, Six Flags’ #1 rollercoaster. Research show that 95% of the time, people only come to this stupendous amusement park to go on Superman. Swirling all around over and over again, and suddenly feeling a whip of semi-n, is what Catwoman’s whip is all about. Riding on a not so sturdy, wooden rollercoaster can get crazy if you go on Thunderbolt. This rollercoaster was on of the first one built at the park, feels like you are trapped in a wild thunderstorm.
It is amazing that the waterpark is the favorite part of the amusement park to so many people. Like my brother says “you can never get rnough of the worlds strongest element.” Being sloshed around the wavepool is exciting to try and swim through. A delirous rain is no match for the sprinklers at Six Flags. Sitting in an inflated life preserver and being engulfed by giant waterfalls, really gives you the feeling of a hurricane. Lastly, the tube slides will make you want to scream for your mother when you lie inside the dark tunnel and can’t see a thing, until you get to the end.
As you can see, being at Six Flags new England, can be the 3 d’s: dangerous, delicious and of course delirious. So get ready for the mouth watering food, exciting rides, and refreshing water park.
