With Common Core State Standards just around the corner, Empowering Writers continues to be dedicated to the ever-changing needs of teachers.  We’ve heard your concerns about how to “do it all” in terms of meeting the comprehensive writing demands of the Common Core.  

We’re in the process of finalizing a new resource for each grade level (2-5) (with pre k through 1st grade to follow).

The Essential Guides will enhance and supplement our existing Comprehensive Guides.  Each grade level resource will cover the all CCSS requirements and more.  The month-by-month format will provide teachers with everything they need to successfully address the requirements in a practical, manageable way, as well as providing the opportunity for deeper instruction in their grade level’s traditional main genre focus. 

The Essential Guides will also stress the reading/writing connection in order to empower strategic readers and informed writers. 

Instruction in all genres and CCSS will be woven, thematically, throughout the school year, rather than through isolated units of study.  The following areas will be addressed at each grade level:

sentence construction, parts of speech * narrative writing * expository/informative writing * opinion/persuasive writing *response to text * basic research skills * letter writing * poetry
